Tourism in Mauritius continues its positive momentum, driving new opportunities for the retail sector and TFS network. Between January and September 2025, the island welcomed 1,008,098 visitors, a 3.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
This steady growth is led by strong performances from European markets, notably France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as rising arrivals from Réunion Island and South Africa. These segments continue to underpin Mauritius’ positioning as both a leisure and shopping destination. Monthly patterns show consistent gains through the year, with July and August peaking thanks to the European summer holidays and April and May posting above-average growth. Even the quieter months held stable, pointing to a longer, more balanced tourism season that benefits year-round retail activity.
Tourist Arrivals Trend
Encouragingly, based on current performance, Mauritius is on track to exceed 1.4 million tourist arrivals by the end of 2025, potentially its best result since 2019. This signals a continued momentum for retailers and partners looking to grow sales through the TFS channel.
Top Source Markets
European visitors, particularly from France, remain the largest group of spenders, while regional travellers from Réunion Island and South Africa continue to rise steadily. These trends highlight the value of tailoring communication, product assortment, and promotions to suit both short-stay regional and long-stay European shoppers.
For TFS registered operators
Every additional 1% rise in arrivals brings more than ten thousand of new potential customers into the retail ecosystem. With over 1,500 stores now listed under the TFS network, digital visibility and pre-arrival engagement via the Tax Free Shopping App will play a critical role in converting these travellers into active buyers.
