The final quarter of 2024 has brought a refreshing turnaround for Mauritius’ Tax Free Shopping (TFS) network. With a 2% growth in transactions compared to the same period in 2023, it reversed the downward trend seen earlier in the year.
Travellers from South Africa, Russia, and Madagascar led the charge, with double-digit growth in tax free purchases, while the innovative Airport Delivery Service contributed significantly to the surge. This service, now available in almost 400 shops, saw a 13% increase in usage by Mauritians alone, highlighting its convenience and success.
Four Product Categories comprising Jewelleries & Accessories, Clothing & Fashion, Health & Beauty Products and Alcohol & Spirits performed strongly in 2024, representing more than 80% of total TFS sales value. Meanwhile, the network itself expanded to nearly 1,500 shops, with two-thirds fully digitalized contributing to more than 30% of transactions sent online.
However, the year wasn’t without its challenges. Declines were noted from travellers from Reunion, Belgium, and other key markets like Germany, Italy, and India.
Looking ahead, the TFS network plans to enhance its delivery systems and Shop Portal utilization, ensuring a smoother experience for travelers. With bold strategies and a renewed focus on innovation, 2024 ends on a high note, setting the stage for a successful year ahead.
